The Health Ministries Department serves as a resource for information and counsel on health and temperance affairs and advises the Church and its departments and related agencies on health and/or temperance related policies and programs. The Health department promotes a healthful lifestyle among church members and the wider community.

True temperance teaches us to dispense entirely with everything hurtful and to use judiciously that which is healthful. {Patriarchs and Prophets 562} Temperance also involves the wise use of those things that are good. The body needs nutritious food and work or exercise to remain healthy, but if you eat so much at a meal that you are stuffed, if you overwork or over-exercise, you actually harm your system. If you snack throughout the day or eat at irregular times, you harm the delicate operation of the digestive organs. That which is healthful and necessary for your body becomes harmful if used in too large or too small quantities or at irregular intervals.
